Your project photos can improve a website when they help a customer understand the work. Image SEO is not a trick for forcing photos into search results; it is the practice of making images clear, accessible and relevant to the page.
Write useful alternative text
Describe what matters in the image, especially when it explains the work. “New oak kitchen worktop fitted in a Leeds home” is more useful than “IMG_5821” if that is what the picture shows. If an image is purely decorative, a web developer may use empty alt text so screen readers can skip it.
Do not cram the trade, town, phone number and every service into alt text. Do not claim a photo shows a job or location if it does not.
Name and size files sensibly
Before uploading, give the file a short descriptive name such as oak-kitchen-worktop-leeds.webp. Use an image format and dimensions suitable for the page, and compress large files so they do not slow it down. Keep a high-quality original separately if you may need it later.
Add context around the photo
Place the photo near copy that explains the service, the problem solved or a detail of the finish. Use a caption when it adds useful context. Ask permission before publishing customer property photos and remove identifying details where needed; see our photo privacy guide.
Google's image SEO guidance and SEO Starter Guide explain image context and descriptive text. No filename, alt text or markup guarantees a ranking.
